Experience the beauty, drama, and expressive power of Baroque music with Tafelmusik, Toronto’s internationally acclaimed Baroque orchestra, renowned for its vibrant performances on period instruments and its imaginative approach to historical music. In Staircases, audiences are invited on a fascinating journey through the architecture, culture, and musical imagination of the Baroque era. Created by Tafelmusik musician Alison Mackay and directed by violinist Julia Wedman, this captivating multimedia production explores staircases as far more than architectural structures. They served as grand stages for ceremony, symbols of power and social status, places of devotion and commerce, and pathways representing both oppression and freedom.
Combining exquisite live music, compelling narration, and striking visual projections, Staircases brings history to life through works by composers including Henry Purcell, George Frideric Handel, Antonio Vivaldi, Johann Friedrich Fasch, and Johann Sebastian Bach. The program also features bass-baritone and narrator Jonathan Woody, whose performance of The Unbounded Soul, inspired by the poetry of eighteenth-century writer Phillis Wheatley, offers a powerful reflection on freedom, humanity, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
Rich in historical insight and musical splendour, Staircases offers a distinctive concert experience that connects the artistic brilliance of the Baroque period with the stories, struggles, and aspirations that continue to resonate today.
