An evening to explore and unpack the myriad ways music is powerful and political; it's about survival, solidarity and community building - joyful, galvanising, subversive, imbued with history and culture, a record of love and loss and resilience, an archive with a rythm. With us to explore music as life - politics, power, creation - we have the most extraordinary panel: Dave Randall, DJ Paulette and Adèle Oliver, hosted by JJ Fadaka.
Our speakers:
Adèle Oliver is an artist, scholar, and linguist from Birmingham. She graduated from SOAS, University of London with an MA in Postcolonial Studies after completing an undergraduate degree in Portuguese and Linguistics. Her work, in its recognition of overlooked perspectives, identifies and amplifies side-lined voices in art and popular culture. Adèle’s intellectual commitment to unravelling histories (and subsequent epistemologies) using an acutely critical lens.
Dave Randall is a musician, producer and activist. He has toured the world playing guitar with Faithless, Dido, Sinead O’Connor and many others. He also teaches courses on guitar and the creative industries at BIMM University Bristol.
Winner of the DJ Mag Top 100 Lifetime Achievement Award (2022) and the Keychange (PRS) Inspiration Award (Sound City April 2023), DJ Paulette is a highly regarded DJ across the UK and Europe, born and raised in (and still resident of) Manchester. Over a 30-year career, she has scaled the heights of dance music fame and hedonism playing disco, house and techno to huge crowds and in cool underground basements. She is a dj who is renowned for consistently ‘smashing’ every set she plays. One of two women to have a regular monthly residency at the Hacienda, she went on to have residencies at Heaven and Ministry of Sound, before serving successful stints in Paris and Ibiza. She has a keen talent for reinvention and replicating excellence. She is known for her monthly radio shows with Reform Radio, Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM and has a Global Residency show produced in collaboration with The Radio Department that can be found on Apple Music. She is a regular presenter stand in for AFRODEUTSCHE and Craig Charles on BBC 6 Music.
