About this Event
Mukul and Ghetto Tigers presents ‘Who am I?’, an audio play with powerful visuals and sound written by Tarun Jasani, which explores the question of ‘identity’ raised by second/third generation children whose parents left pre partition India during colonial times and emigrated to Africa and then to Britain. The play investigates what it means for young people growing up in a system with colonial legacy and explores how past events experienced by their parents and grandparents still affect them.
This event is a positive example of how oral history, when combined with creative practice and collaborations, can spark wider dialogues, fresh interpretations and new understandings. These testimonies bring to life the project’s central question: how do we make sense of belonging, when our histories stretch across continents, faiths and generations?
At its core, Who am I? demonstrates the power of oral history to connect memory, identity and creativity. It shows that when stories are shared, whether on stage, in archives, or in community discussions, they become catalysts for understanding across generations and to the wider public.
The Who Am I? archive has been deposited with the Living Refugee Archive at the University of East London.
