In the spirit of Martinmas, we make our lanterns and gather to walk by candlelight.
About this Event

As autumn deepens and the days grow shorter, we gather as a community to bring our light into the darkness. The Lantern Walk, inspired by the festival of Martinmas, is a cherished Waldorf tradition that reminds us of the warmth and generosity that live within each of us.

Carrying our handmade lanterns, we will walk together through the peaceful paths of Oxleas Wood, illuminated by gentle candlelight and song. It is a time to pause, to breathe, and to share a sense of wonder and gratitude for the turning of the seasons.

After the walk, we’ll gather to enjoy warm drinks and biscuits, continuing the spirit of togetherness and quiet joy that Martinmas invites.

The festival of Martinmas, celebrated in Waldorf schools around the world, honours the story of Saint Martin, who shared his cloak with a beggar on a cold winter’s night. His gesture of kindness reminds us that even the smallest light—of a lantern, a heart, or a helping hand—can shine brightly against the darkness.

LANTERN MAKING WORKSHOP

Thursday, 6th November | 4pm – 6pm
Location: Greenwich Waldorf School Hall

Families are warmly invited to join us for a lantern-making afternoon to prepare for the Lantern Walk. This is a lovely opportunity to create your own handmade lanterns together in the gentle, creative spirit of the season.

All materials will be provided. The activity is recommended for children aged 8 and above, though younger siblings are welcome to attend and watch with their families.
