About this Event
In 1820s Chester, masquerades were the talk of the town - and one woman led the way. Briefly but brilliantly, Susanna Mainwaring threw open the doors of her grand townhouse on Watergate Street to host some of the most glittering events the city had ever seen.
Drawing on the speaker’s own original research and published work, this talk tells the story of Mrs Mainwaring and her masquerades. It also explores how her gatherings fitted into the wider fashion for masquerading at the time, and into Chester’s rich theatrical traditions.
Discover a forgotten chapter of Chester’s social history and the remarkable woman at its heart.
