The Mountain Shag Club was formed in 1988 as a non-profit corporation and is currently a member of the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs. The Mountain Shag CLub was formed with the purpose of bringing people together for fellowship and entertainment, promote the revival and preservation of beach music and shagging, and participate in civic and charitable sanctions and events.
The Carolina Shag is a smooth swing style dance performed to beach music. It is the official state popular dance of North Carolina and the official state dance of South Carolina. The Carolina Shag traces its roots back to the 1940s along the shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean around North Myrtle and Carolina Beach region.
