From towering peaks to mighty water ways, experience two back-to-back documentaries exploring humanity’s awe, dependence, and impact on mountains and rivers.
Mountain:
Drawing on spectacular footage captured across mountain ranges around the world, Mountain explores the evolving relationship between humans and high places. Through breathtaking imagery of climbers, skiers, mountaineers and adventurers, the film examines why mountains have shifted from being feared and avoided to becoming objects of fascination, challenge and desire.
Part documentary, visual poem, and orchestral performance, Mountain is likely to take your breath away. Willem Dafoe's narration, adapted from the writings of Robert Macfarlane, is paired with a powerful score performed by the Australian Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Richard Tognetti. The result is an immersive reflection on ambition, mortality and the irresistible pull of the sublime.

River:
Spanning six continents, River examines the timeless relationship between people and rivers, revealing how these waterways have nurtured human settlement, enabled trade and agriculture, inspired spiritual traditions and transformed entire landscapes. Examining the consequences of damming, diverting and polluting rivers, the film asks also asks us how we might rethink our relationship with one of nature’s most essential water systems.
Extraordinary cinematography and archival footage is used to great effect as the film traces humanity's long effort to understand, harness and control flowing water. Narrated by Willem Dafoe and accompanied by a powerful score from the Australian Chamber Orchestra, it is both a celebration and a warning of what will happen if protection of the waterways that have shaped landscapes, cultures and civilisations across the globe is not taken seriously.
