This stage play is inspired by the powerful true story found in the book Mother of Inmates written by Teresa Tarpley. It tells the raw and transparent journey of a mother navigating the consequences of generational pain, neglect, and difficult life choices. Having grown up experiencing neglect herself, Teresa carried wounds that later shaped her parenting and the struggles within her own family.Set against the backdrop of urban life, the story follows her painful realization as two of her sons become entangled in the Texas prison system. Through moments of reflection, regret, accountability, and resilience, the play explores the harsh realities many families face when cycles of trauma, poverty, and poor decisions collide.
Mother of Inmates is not just a story about incarceration—it is a story about responsibility, redemption, and the emotional weight a mother carries when confronted with the outcomes of her past. It shines a light on the often-unspoken truth behind prison walls: the mothers left behind, grappling with guilt, heartbreak, and the hope that healing can still begin.
Based on the book Mother of Inmates by Teresa Tarpley.
Stage play written and directed by international award-winning writer, director, and producer Jeanette Greenwood.
