The University of North Florida celebrates the centenary of American composer Morton Feldman (1926–2026) with two evenings dedicated to his groundbreaking and influential music. Presented by UNF English Professor Clark Lunberry, the series features acclaimed performers Louis Goldstein and Tom Chiu, who bring extensive experience performing and recording Feldman’s work. The two programs explore Feldman’s distinctive approach to contemporary classical music, known for its spacious textures, subtle changes, and careful attention to sound and silence.Wednesday, October 7 | 7:00–9:00 p.m. — Triadic Memories
Pianist Louis Goldstein performs Feldman’s Triadic Memories, one of the composer’s most significant works for solo piano. Goldstein is a noted interpreter of Feldman’s music and has recorded several of his major compositions. This performance offers an opportunity to experience Feldman’s expansive musical language through an extended solo piano work.
Thursday, October 8 | 7:00–9:00 p.m. — For John Cage
Violinist Tom Chiu and pianist Louis Goldstein perform Feldman’s For John Cage, written in 1982 as a tribute to fellow American composer and longtime friend John Cage. Chiu, a founding member of the Flux Quartet, has performed and recorded Feldman’s music extensively, while Goldstein is also recognized for his work as a Feldman interpreter. Together, they bring this distinctive work for violin and piano to life.
