In the decades before the American Revolution, many of Cecil County's earliest families left Maryland in search of land and opportunity, traveling west to the Appalachian Mountains and south along the Great Wagon Road. More than 150 years later, the migration reversed as families from southwestern Virginia and northwestern North Carolina returned to the region their ancestors had left generations earlier.This is an Exploring Appalachia program. This project was supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and Arts Midwest.
