International MEPOST Project and VU IIRPS invites for the keynote lecture by Gabriella Szabó on moral emotions in divided societies.Emotions link our past experiences with the way we see ourselves, other people, and society today. Although experiences of loss, disrespect, injustice, shame, or wounded pride may leave lasting emotional traces, they do not necessarily carry a fixed political meaning. Why is it that some experiences of injury remain private, while others develop into shared grievances, demands for recognition, or calls for redress? The keynote will examine the processes through which moral emotions acquire social and political significance with particular attention to recognition and misrecognition, to the communication and social sharing of emotional experiences, and to the role of political narratives in turning emotional experiences into politically meaningful interpretations and claims. The talk will argue that there is no automatic political outcome of emotions: what they come to mean, and what follows from them, depends on how emotional experiences are interpreted and made sense of, both individually and collectively.
Gabriella Szabó is the Senior Research Fellow at the ELTE Centre for Social Sciences in Budapest, Hungary. Szabó’s research focuses on moral emotions in political communication, moralising rhetoric, and the management of emotions in electoral campaigns. She is the editor of Managing Moral Emotions in Divided Politics: Lessons from Hungary’s 2022 General Election Campaigns (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024).
