THE GHOST OF PETER SWART
Monthly Movie Screening & Family Abuse Discussion
One Movie. One Conversation. A Chance to Break the Silence.
Some families look perfect from the outside.
Behind closed doors, however, there can be jealousy, manipulation, rejection, anger, control, emotional abuse and physical abuse that nobody talks about.
The Ghost of Peter Swart tells a story that opens the door to one of the most difficult conversations we need to have: What happens to families when abuse becomes part of everyday life?
We invite you to join us for a monthly screening of The Ghost of Peter Swart, followed by an open discussion about the issues raised by the film and how they may affect families in real life.
THE SCREENING
Once a month, we will create an opportunity for people to come together and watch The Ghost of Peter Swart in a shared screening environment.
The purpose is not simply to watch a movie.
It is to create a space where people can recognise experiences, ask questions, share perspectives and begin conversations that are often kept behind closed doors.
The film explores the devastating impact that controlling, jealous, manipulative and abusive behaviour can have on a woman and on an entire family.
THE CONVERSATION AFTERWARDS
After each screening, the audience will be invited to participate in a facilitated discussion.
We will explore questions such as:
- What does abuse actually look like inside a family?
- When does jealousy become control?
- How does manipulation affect a person's mind?
- What happens when anger becomes intimidation?
- How does emotional rejection affect a woman over time?
- How does abuse affect children who grow up witnessing it?
- Why do people sometimes remain in abusive relationships?
- Why can it be so difficult to speak about what happens inside the home?
- How can families recognise the warning signs?
- How can we support someone experiencing abuse without judging them?
- What does healing look like after years of emotional or physical abuse?
Most importantly, we want to ask:
How many other families are living through something similar—and suffering in silence?
THIS IS NOT JUST LOUISE'S STORY
Although The Ghost of Peter Swart tells a specific story, the conversation reaches far beyond one family.
There are women who have lived with controlling husbands.
There are children who have grown up afraid of a parent's anger.
There are families who have learned to keep secrets.
There are people who have been manipulated into believing that the abuse was somehow their fault.
And there are survivors who have never had the opportunity to tell their story.
This monthly screening creates an opportunity to say:
You are not alone.
A SAFE SPACE FOR CONVERSATION
The discussion is intended to be respectful, compassionate and non-judgmental.
Nobody will be required to share a personal experience.
Nobody will be forced to speak.
But for those who want to participate, there will be an opportunity to talk about the realities of abuse and its impact on individuals and families.
The goal is not to attack men or blame women.
The goal is to recognise abusive behaviour, understand its consequences, support those affected and create healthier families.
WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
To make this possible, we are seeking monthly funding and sponsorship so that the movie can be screened free of charge to the public.
We want to remove the financial barrier and make these screenings accessible to people who may never otherwise have the opportunity to attend.
Funding will help us create a sustainable monthly screening and discussion environment where people can come together, watch the film and engage in meaningful conversations about abuse, family relationships, emotional wellbeing and healing.
Your contribution can help us turn a movie into a movement for awareness.
HELP US KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING
We believe that sometimes a movie can do something that a lecture cannot.
It can make people feel.
It can make people recognise something.
It can make someone say:
"That happened in my family."
"I thought I was the only one."
"Now I understand what was happening."
And perhaps most importantly:
"We need to talk about this."
That is why we want to screen The Ghost of Peter Swart every month, followed by a meaningful discussion about the realities that many families continue to experience behind closed doors.
COME WATCH. COME LISTEN. COME TALK.
