It’s our MONTHLY FOLK NIGHT but with a twist for Christmas. We welcome The Holbeck Moor Mummers around 830pm to add some Christmas spirit and raise money for St Gemma's Hospice. Always a wonderful evening! Feel free to pop in and participate or just listen over a drink
Who are The Holbeck Moor Mummers?
They are - very silly / totally amateur / raising money for charity
Mummers plays are a mainly English tradition going back hundreds of years. Round these parts they’re known as Mummers, in Cheshire they have Soul Cakers, in East Anglia it’s Plough Monday and Halloween is maybe a close relative
Many of these traditions are rooted in workers trying to raise a bit of money (and having a bit of fun) when there was little if any rural work (i.e. pay) in the cold weather months. This even extended into the industrial West Midlands where the canal boatmen would go out as Molly Dancers to raise a bit of money when the canals were frozen over. Molly Dancers could also be found in Lincolnshire and elsewhere. It’s very likely that Molly dancers were based on the concept of Morris dancers
Like many other villages, Clifford had its own mummers play but, as with many others, the Clifford mummers play performances declined in the 20th century. The last performance by the Clifford Mummers was filmed in the village hall in the early 21st century
The Holbeck Moor Mummers were formed in Leeds in 1962 in an effort to revive a long-time Yorkshire Christmas custom. It must be succeeding since they’re still performing every Christmas
