• What is the difference between a monoprint and a monotype? There is often confusion between the two. Monoprints are variable images taken from a matrix that has the potential to be editionable. A monotype is a one-of-a-kind print that will exist in its own ‘unique state’. It starts with a clean, even surface, then adding ink or paint and working the surface to create an image before taking an impression on paper.

This workshop will focus on the skills required to create monotypes using watercolour. Participants will be asked to bring a range of ideas that can form the basis for imagery to be translated into artworks using the nuances that the medium of watercolour make possible, aligned with the unique qualities of a printed image. Brushes will be used to apply watercolour to specially prepared plates, images will be printed using a specific methodology and there will be ample opportunity to create a large amount of work in various sizes.

A knowledge of watercolour would be useful, but no previous experience is necessary.
