About this Event
Two Chicago guitarists, Peter Lerner and Rob Block, each encouraged Tetsuya Nishiyama to study jazz. He grew up in Nagoya, Japan, and moved to Chicago in 2010, and he holds bachelor's and master's degrees in jazz studies from Northern Illinois University, where he studied with Fareed Haque and Bobby Broom.
He's played the Green Mill, Andy's Jazz Club, and the Jazz Showcase. He's worked as a sideman for Buddy Guy, Roy Ayers, and The Emotions, and he's performed with Marquis Hill, Ryan Kisor, and Adam Larson. At the same February awards where his trio won, organist Mitch Towne's Refuge won Album of the Year; Nishiyama plays guitar on all seven tracks.
He directs jazz combos at the University of Kansas, teaches guitar at Washburn University, and is working toward a doctorate in jazz performance at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. In March 2026 his trio was the house band at NOMA Sessions Jazz Mondays in Omaha.
