"Yes, Loren Broaddus plays French horn," Plastic Sax's William Brownlee wrote about Blackout!! in June, "and no, the instrument doesn't sound like a freakish novelty in a jazz context."
He made the record with bassist Andrew Voggesser and drummer Matt Robertson, and on the track "Sling" he speaks a poem by his father, also named Loren Broaddus. His father's book Wasn't Any Maybe So is about Newt Allen and his Kansas City Monarchs.
He's from Springfield, Missouri, started piano at six and horn at eleven, and moved to Kansas City in 2023. Since then he's released The Sentimental Rebel (2024), a six-movement jazz tone poem about growing up an outsider, with Coleman Gliddon on piano, Ben Tervort on bass, and Jaylen Ward on drums. He plays horn in Alien Practice, and in January he composed and organized The Eternal Project, an eight-player piece; Nick Hmeljak, Matt Otto, and Brian Steever were in the band.
He has called the horn "the panda of the jazz world."
