About the performance:
Frank Rosaly -
Bimini is a durational improvised solo drumming performance, collaborating with high contrast, improvised light projection based on research of ritual & ceremonial traditions of the nearly extinct Caribbean indigenous Tainos (Puerto Rico). Frank uses ancient technologies like ancient instruments, polyrhythms & repetition, inducing sound sources to break form from the classic transactional podium exchange to a collective experience about fugitivity of rights (& rites), liberty & release in an hour+ experience.
Utilising material & people in pairs (2 bass drums, 2 gongs, 2 projectors, etc.), Bimini examines the dichotomy of his indigenous/Spanish heritage & complex cultural clashes, but not as an exclusive act of self-reflection. It is a metaphor about us all: duplicitous beings longing for a state of shared conversance.
Frank will collaborate with Rotterdam-based visual artist Noortje vd Eijnde to project monolithic bars of light upon the performer, or thin strips, which will toggle both in & out of rhythm with the drumming, creating counter-rhythms & aligning dialogue as we improvise together, informed by what we see and hear, creating a ghostly landscape. Light will rotate, obscure and redefine the space. The drumming ceases to be the focal point. Collaboration of space, light, image & sound become of equal & horizontal importance.
DJ Noralie -
Noortje vd Eijnde has been moonlighting as a DJ and has been featured in clubs, festivals and theater performances throughout the Netherlands for several years. For this set, DJ Noralie will play with the borders of non-dance ASMR sound design and rhythmic explorations.
Noralie is visual artist, creating multi-disciplinary experiences where her medium, video, plays a major role for music, theatre & art festivals. Another focus is on bathing culture, in how to cocoon in blankets of sound waves, smoke and light.
