John Waters pitches teen delinquent rockers against squares in this Elvis-spoofing, music-filled romance. With Johnny Depp, Ricki Lake and Iggy Pop.Waters’ second film after going legit with 1988’s anti-racist doo-wop masterpiece Hairspray, Cry-Baby sees DIY trash-merchant John Waters working on an even larger canvas.
Set in 50s Baltimore it tells of the forbidden love between Cry Baby Walker (a beyond-beautiful Johnny Depp), a juvenile delinquent, and Allison Vernon-Williams, a straight. Their star-crossed romance infuriates both the freaks and the squares.
“John Waters tries his best to make a nice, family number, only to result on something deeply strange and weird. With a fantastic performance by Johnny Depp and a scene-stealing appearance by the ever-lovely Kim McGuire. Like a weird Grease” Young Electrics
