"High-resolution Modelling of freshwater from the Greenland Ice Sheet towards the Atlantic's deep water formation regions"
Dr Paul Myers, Professor and Sr. Associate Dean Research (Strategic Initiatives), Science, University of Alberta
The Greenland Ice Sheet is melting at an accelerating pace under climate change, adding new large amounts of freshwater to the ocean. This additional freshwater input has consequences not only for global sea level rise but potentially also for the structure of the North Atlantic water column and, by extension, for the global overturning circulation. This presentation will explore pathways of the Greenland meltwater from the fiords to the continental shelf and the deep ocean. This includes the role of the subpolar gyre's boundary currents, and the processes that may allow this low salinity water to enter the gyre interior, where it may impact deep water formation and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).
