Join award-winning author and comedian Marc Burrows for a festive journey through one of Britain’s most enduring musical traditions.
About this Event

From The Beatles and glam rock to Band Aid, reality-TV winners, novelty records, charity campaigns and streaming sensations, the race for the Christmas No. 1 has been part of British festive culture for more than 70 years.

But why does reaching the top of the singles chart at Christmas still make headlines? Why do the same songs return year after year? And what do our Christmas hits tell us about changing tastes, the music industry – and ourselves?

Join Marc Burrows, award-winning author, comedian and musician, as he delves into the fascinating, funny and occasionally absurd history of the festive chart battle, drawing on the newly updated 2026 edition of The Story of the Christmas No. 1.

Expect chart battles, unlikely hits, festive controversies, musical nostalgia and plenty of trivia, as Marc explores the stories behind the songs we love – and sometimes love to hate.

The new edition also brings the story right up to date with Kylie Minogue’s 2025 Christmas No. 1, “XMAS”, exploring how the festive chart has changed in the streaming age and what it now takes to secure that coveted Christmas top spot.

His first edition of The Story of the Christmas No. 1, featuring a foreword by comedian Phil Jupitus, sold out well before Christmas.
