𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:The Minty Fresh Circus features an all-Black cast performing to a recorded score. Conceived and directed by Monique Martin, the ensemble of seven performs a variety of movements and rituals that reference the African diaspora and Black American culture.
Physical performance aside, Minty Fresh is inspired by generations of Black Americans and named after Araminta “Minty” Ross, the birth name of Harriet Tubman. In early circuses, Black performers often were present as slave labor. The Minty Fresh artists embark on a physical exploration to answer the question: “What does freedom feel and sound like if your only access to it is through your imagination?”
The program features percussive dance, ritual movement, Lindy, hip-hop, poppin’ and lockin’, jukin’, hand games, and physical theater. The driving score is recorded and features a combination of mixes by Corey Action with compositions from Soul Science Lab.
