Two nationally-known mystery writers will discuss the methods and mechanisms of creating appealing mysteries at 1 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 1, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.
This event is free of charge and is open to the public. There is no registration.
The JPL Mini-Mystery Writers Conference is co-sponsored by the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival, a French Quarter celebration of literature, theatre, cuisine and music. The event is also co-sponsored by Third Lantern Lit, a collective of writers that provide community and education to New Orlans writers at all stages of their journeys. Both are 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations.
1 p.m. – Ellen Byron on “The Magic of Setting”
Mystery Writer Ellen Byron will lead a workshop titled “The Magic of Setting,” at 1 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 1In this seminar, Byron takes participants through sharing and writing exercises that allow people to explore a location that is special to them and then use what they discover in their writing. The group builds a setting together, then works in pairs and finally individually to mine the emotion and power of place.
Ellen Byron is a USA Today bestselling author and recipient of multiple Agatha and Lefty awards for her Cajun Country Mysteries, Vintage Cookbook Mysteries, Catering Hall Mysteries (as Maria DiRico,) and Golden Motel Mysteries. She is also a two-time Anthony Award nominee. She is an award-winning playwright and non-award-winning TV writer of comedies such as Wings, Just Shoot Me, and Fairly Odd Parents. She has written more than 200 articles for national magazines but considers her most impressive credit working as a cater-waiter for Martha Stewart. A native New Yorker, Byron is a graduate of Tulane University.
3 p.m. – Michael Rigg on “Dynamics of Character”
Writing compelling characters for a mystery requires balancing their unique investigative style with deep personal flaws and clear motives. He will discuss how to: create strong motivation and a valid reason to risk danger; believable access to information or possession of professional skills that grant them unique investigative skills; distinct flaws and vulnerabilities such as impulsiveness; realistic methods – no magical deductions; and a grounded support system such as a skeptical friend or sidekick.
Agatha and Anthony-nominated author Michael Rigg, an attorney for more than four decades, writes mysteries and thrillers set in two different locations: Virginia Beach (where he lives) and New Orleans (which he visits as often as possible “for research,” including participation in three Mardi Gras krewes). He is a retired Navy Judge Advocate and a retired civilian government attorney, formerly working for the Department of the Navy.
