About this Event
STRICTLY 18+ ONLY
Completed in 1861 as the headquarters for the 47th Lancashire Rifle Volunteer Corps, Mill Street Barracks in St Helens has served a wide variety of roles throughout its long military and local history. The imposing red-brick drill hall accommodated numerous branches of the armed forces and mobilized troops ahead of major deployments to the Western Front in World War I.
Beyond its primary function as a training ground and military base, the barracks played a somber role during both World Wars when its cellars were used as a makeshift morgue for fallen soldiers and civilian casualties of bombing raids.
In the interwar and post-war eras, the building adapted to community needs by acting as a tuberculosis isolation unit and even a boxing arena. It was officially decommissioned by the military in 1980 and converted into a training facility for the St Helens Sea Cadets.
Today, the historic landmark is widely celebrated for its rich heritage and its modern reputation as one of the most actively haunted locations in the UK and is famed for an array of intense and diverse paranormal phenomena that draw investigators from across the globe.
The building's dark, subterranean cellar is notorious for a sinister, aggressive male presence that has reportedly scratched visitors and terrified investigators, contrasted sharply by the gentle spirit of Claire, a phantom nurse believed to have tended to tuberculosis patients.
Upstairs in the old accommodation blocks, a spirit nicknamed "Jack" (or James) is known to deliberately harass female guests by pushing them or whispering in their ears, while the main Drill Hall frequently echoes with the disembodied sounds of marching boots, moving furniture, and a motionless "tea lady" phantom. Perhaps the most endearing resident is Bruce, a three-legged black dog belonging to a former caretaker, whose ghostly form and distinct growls are regularly witnessed as he searches the historic barracks for his long-lost master.
Who or what will we encounter when we visit one of our most beloved locations!?
