ONE BOUNTY HUNTER. ONE FUGITIVE. ONE VERY LONG JOURNEY.Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin are the ultimate mismatched duo in MIDNIGHT RUN (1988), one of the funniest and most underrated action comedies of the 1980s.
De Niro plays Jack Walsh, a hard-bitten bounty hunter hired to bring in Jonathan “The Duke” Mardukas (Grodin), a mild-mannered accountant who has stolen millions from the mob. It should be a straightforward job: pick him up in New York and deliver him to Los Angeles.
But with the FBI, rival bounty hunters and the Mafia all on their trail, a simple cross-country trip becomes a chaotic race against time.
Part buddy comedy, part road movie, part action thriller, MIDNIGHT RUN is a brilliantly entertaining blend of sharp dialogue, escalating disasters and unexpected friendship. De Niro is at his gloriously exasperated best, while a never-better Charles Grodin steals the show with his impeccable deadpan delivery.
Directed by Martin Brest (BEVERLY HILLS COP) and featuring a fantastic, energetic score by Oingo Boingo’s Danny Elfman, MIDNIGHT RUN is a hugely enjoyable 1980s classic that deserves to be seen on the big screen.
Two men who can’t stand each other. Thousands of miles to go. What could possibly go wrong?
