Mickey Revenaugh's new book School's Out takes a look inside the quiet revolution reshaping how American children learn.
In the wake of the pandemic, millions of American families have made a quiet but consequential decision: to leave traditional schools behind. Revenaugh takes readers inside the rapidly expanding world of unconventional education.
She's had an incredibly rich and varied career, from education journalist to online-learning pioneer. Locally, she's a board member for Yellow Arrow Press, supporting the work of women writers in Baltimore and beyond. The Executive Director of the Press, Annie Marhefka, joins her in conversation at this event. Mickey Revenaugh is the author of School’s Out: Why Families Are Choosing Unconventional Education, published in August 2026 by Johns Hopkins University Press. She is the co-founder of Connections Academy, the pioneering online school provider launched in Baltimore in 2001 and now serving students around the world as part of Pearson. Previously, she helped start the E-rate program to wire every American school to the Internet and was longtime edtech editor at Scholastic. Mickey is Board President for Yellow Arrow Publishing, a Baltimore-based independent press dedicated to elevating the voices of women-identifying writers. She has an MFA from Bennington College, an MBA from NYU, and recently began studies for a PhD in Education at Concordia University in Montreal.
Annie Marhefka is a writer in Baltimore and the Executive Director at Yellow Arrow Publishing, a Baltimore-based independent press. Her essays and poetry have appeared in Baltimore Review, The Slowdown Show, Whale Road Review, and more. She is an MFA candidate at the University of Baltimore, and has authored two collections, Strangers We Know By Heart, and Baltimore, a travelogue memoir in the Writer in Sites series. Annie has received support from the Maryland State Arts Council, Gullkistan Center for the Arts, Martha’s Vineyard Institute for Creative Writing, and Tin House. She served as the Head of HR and COO for Pearson Online Schools during its formative decade, and now works as a fractional Head of HR for startups in the education and healthcare industries.
