About this Event
TPL presents acclaimed author and Governor General's Award finalist Merilyn Simonds in conversation with journalist and author Moira Welsh at the Toronto Reference Library's Jack Rabinovitch Reading Room.
In her intimate and profoundly moving book Walking with Beth: Conversations with My Hundred-Year-Old Friend, national bestselling author Merilyn Simonds invites us into three years of weekly walks with Beth Robinson, her neighbour and friend. When they began in the spring of 2021, Simonds had just turned 70, still active, still writing, but entering what struck her as a mysterious and frightening stage of life. Beth, a former dancer and occupational therapist who worked until age 99, was already a centenarian: vibrant, sharp, and as awake to the world as someone half her age. Who better to ask what might come next?
What emerges is neither a conventional memoir nor a straightforward biography, but something more fluid: a meditation on friendship between women across generations, on mortality and meaning, on the passions that sustain us through life's least understood passage.
Q&A and book signing to follow. Books available for purchase.
