About this Event
This training explores the relationship between neurodivergence and mental health, including the challenges neurodivergent people may experience when their needs are misunderstood or unsupported. Participants will consider how sensory differences, communication needs, masking, executive functioning difficulties and repeated experiences of exclusion can affect emotional wellbeing.
The session will also examine how mental distress may present differently in neurodivergent people, the risk of diagnostic overshadowing, and why conventional approaches to mental health support may not always be accessible or effective. Participants will gain practical strategies for providing compassionate, person-centred and neurodiversity-affirming support.
Summary
An accessible and practical introduction to the connection between neurodivergence and mental health. Participants will develop a greater understanding of different presentations of distress and learn how to adapt their communication, environments and support approaches.
This is a free training event for parent carers of children with additional needs and/or disabilities within North Somerset. This event is also open to professionals who work with children/young people with additional needs and/or disabilities in North Somerset. Priority on place allocation will be given based on the criteria above.
