Focus guitarist Menno Gootjes joins legendary rock journalist Chris Welch for a fascinating live question-and-answer session exploring some of the greatest years in rock music.As well as being an acclaimed guitarist, Menno is a keen rock music historian with a deep interest in the artists, albums and events that shaped the music we know today. His knowledge and enthusiasm make him the perfect person to interview Chris and delve into the stories behind his remarkable career.
During his many years at Britain’s best-selling music newspaper, Melody Maker, Chris witnessed the birth of progressive and heavy rock, interviewing and reporting on artists ranging from Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience to Yes, ELP and Led Zeppelin.
Menno will take Chris back through the extraordinary musical changes he covered from 1964 to 1979 and beyond. While The Beatles and The Rolling Stones dominated the headlines, the Swinging Sixties also brought an exciting new generation of R&B and blues bands, including The Yardbirds, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and Cream—ushering in the golden age of the guitar hero.
Chris predicted great things for Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, and went on to meet many more masters of the fretboard, including Pete Townshend, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Howe, Ritchie Blackmore and Alvin Lee. Then came the 1970s, when rock music grew even bigger and spread around the world.
Throughout the evening, Chris will also share an extraordinary collection of photographs from those years, including rare images that many people will never have seen before.
With his guitar close at hand, Menno will bring some of rock’s most memorable riffs and themes to life while encouraging Chris to reveal some of the exclusive—and occasionally shocking—stories from his remarkable career.
Expect musical memories ranging from “My Generation”, “Satisfaction” and “Sunshine of Your Love” to “Communication Breakdown”, “Stairway to Heaven”, “Smoke on the Water” and “Walk This Way” Oh—and quite possibly “Stand and Deliver”!
