#InsertingHerselfInArtHistory: Alison Lloyd’s Self-Archiving on Social Media
In this illustrated talk organised by The Sisterhood Collective, artist and researcher Dr Assunta Ruocco explores how Dr Alison Lloyd (1957–2024) used Instagram to bring her unseen photographs from the 1970s and 1980s into contemporary artistic debates. Drawing on her research and conversations with Lloyd, Ruocco introduces the concept of feminist auto-citation to show how the artist transformed her archive into new work through captions, hashtags and exchanges with followers, while asserting her place in art history on her own terms. The talk will be followed by an open discussion about artistic visibility, self-archiving and how women photographers can shape their own histories.
Following the opening of our new Ground Floor and Learning Centre on 6th November, BACKLIT Members are taking over the space with a programme of talks, creative workshops and community gatherings. Join us to explore new ideas, try something different, share experiences and connect with others through art, creativity and conversation.
