Frequency Series Presents: Nicolás Melmann x Shi-An Costello: "Música Aperta," Feldman, Cage, Cowell

Musician and sound artist NICOLÁS MELMANN (ARG/ESP) joins pianist SHI-AN COSTELLO (USA) for the first time to perform works that feature modernist and avant-garde piano compositions by Henry Cowell, Morton Feldman and John Cage, and Melmann's latest release of original compositions, Música Aperta ("Open Music"), finding the points of intersection between 20th century American Experimentalist composers and Melmann's own innovative musical practice. This performance is made possible by the U.S. Embassy of Spain, Experimental Sound Studio, and Constellation's Frequency Series.

Henry COWELL: "Aeolian Harp" (1930)
John CAGE: Waiting (1952)
COWELL: "The Voice of Lir" (1912)
Morton FELDMAN: Palais de Mari (1986)

Nicolás MELMANN: Música Aperta ("Open Music")

NICOLÁS MELMANN (b. 1981 in Argentina) Music composition degree Universidad de Quilmes, Master in Sound Art University of Barcelona, explores the social and poetic aspects of sound in his trans-disciplinary projects. Melmann experiments with technology, creating linear and nonlinear narratives and working across different media. His compositions draw from electronic, electro-acoustic and generative music, featuring experiments with sensors and hydrophones, data-sonification, sound cartographies, installations, and field recordings. melmann.site [http://melmann.site/]

Described as “…a tour de force…” (Boston Musical Intelligencer) and “finds the depth in every note" (composer Phillipe Leroux), SHI-AN COSTELLO has a repertoire that spans the aesthetic sensibilities of four centuries, from J.S. Bach to John Cage, from Chopin to Brian Ferneyhough, and to include the most current of musical styles. In his youth, Shi-An was a piano and theory student under Vladimir Leyetchkiss, one of the last pupils of the legendary Heinrich Neuhaus, and a trombone student under Richard Schmitt, former principal of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. shiancostello.com [http://shiancostello.com/]
