Recurring Echoes is a survey exhibition celebrating 25 years of practice by Liliana Di Lizio Barbieri. Bringing together painting, photography, installation and sculptural works created over more than two decades, the exhibition explores how cultural memory is carried through everyday rituals, materials and acts of making. Drawing deeply from Italian Australian domestic life, Barbieri transforms humble objects such as pasta, textiles, timber and paper into poetic reflections on migration, resilience and belonging. The works also honour the strength and creativity of everyday labour, ritual and craft while reimagining historical narratives through contemporary forms. Across large-scale installations, paintings and intimate works on paper, Recurring Echoes considers heritage as something living and continually reshaped through time, memory and adaptation. The exhibition invites audiences to reflect on the ways personal histories become part of a broader collective cultural story.
Liliana Di Lizio Barbieri is an Italian Australian artist based in Melbourne. Across more than 25 years of practice, her work has travelled between Australia, Italy, China, South Korea and New York. Working across painting and multidisciplinary forms, she creates research-led projects shaped by memory, migration, identity, and cultural inheritance. Her practice gathers fragments of personal and collective histories, tracing connections between place, belonging, and lived experience. Moving between poetic gesture and conceptual inquiry, her work invites reflection on what is carried across time and borders. Liliana holds a Master of Arts by Research from RMIT University, has received national arts grants and lectured in painting and design theory at tertiary institutions.
