About this Event
Meet Jessica McCann for an in-person evening with an author!
Jessica McCann, a Phoenix local, and History Through Fiction (HTF) are partnering with Beyond Words Bookshop to host Jessica for an in-person author event in celebration of the Revised 15th Anniversary Edition of her award-winning historical novel, All Different Kinds of Free.
Set in the years leading up to the Civil War, All Different Kinds of Free tells the remarkable true story of Margaret Morgan, a free woman of color who was kidnapped in 1837 and sold into slavery. Her courageous fight for freedom led to Prigg v. Pennsylvania, one of the most significant—and often overlooked—U.S. Supreme Court cases in American history. Through vivid historical detail and compelling storytelling, the novel explores resilience, justice, family, and the human cost of slavery while bringing an extraordinary woman's story back into the spotlight.
First published in 2011, the novel was honored with the Freedom in Fiction Prize and named an Editor's Choice selection by Historical Novels Review. All Different Kinds of Free is also the featured book for the Community Read at our upcoming History Through Fiction Book Festival. This special anniversary edition introduces Margaret Morgan's extraordinary story to a new generation of readers, ensuring that her courage and legacy are not forgotten.
Shopping at Beyond Words will be open late that evening as well.
