About this Event
Medaille Trust is hosting a national fundraising walk on Sunday 18th October, during Anti-Slavery Week and we’d love you to join us! All proceeds will go towards supporting people affected by trafficking and modern-day slavery. The walk is open to everyone, so please encourage your friends, family and colleagues to come along too.
For those travelling by train, you will need to head to Bradford-on-Avon train station and Bath Spa runs on the same line, so you can either return to Bradford-on-Avon or make your way home from there.
For those travelling by car, there is plenty of parking at Bradford-on-Avon station car park (Zone B) which is open 24/7.
We are currently looking at hiring coaches to take participants from London to Bradford-on-Avon and if you would be interested in this, please let us know in the booking form.
We also have T-shirts for participants and if you can let us know what size you would like in the booking form that would be really appreciated!
Details of the route are below:
Route
To access the start of the walk, take an 8 minute walk into the town to the Lock Inn Café and the canal is on the path in between this and the Canal Tavern. Both of these would be a good place to go to the toilet before starting the walk.
A flat, paved walk along the canal which is about 3 people-wide with grassy terrain on either side. There are no barriers or anything between the path and the canal. Could possibly be a bit muddy in spots if there’s been heavy rain. The path narrows when walking under a bridge.
Once you have reached Avoncliff, you will need to take a right before walking over the bridge which will take you down toward Cross Guns Pub, then a left to go underneath the bridge, this will bring you onto the other side, where you turn left, then left again at the No. 10 Tea Room to bring you onto the other side of the bridge. Then continue along the path.
Following the path you will then come to a large bridge where you need to cross a small quiet road to carry on the path on the other side.
You will then reach Dundas Aqueduct, if you have the time to take a slight detour the Brass Knocker Basin is a 5 minutes walk off the path where there is a café and toilets.
To carry on the path, you will need to go round the aqueduct and behind the storage-looking building. You should then shortly after cross a pedestrian bridge and carry on the walk on the other side.
After about an hour you should then reach Bathampton where there is a boat café on the canal and just on the other side of the bridge a pub with toilets, which would be a good place to stop for lunch which has vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options.
After about 30 minutes you will need to veer left to continue under the bridge and follow the canal. Then once you’ve gone under the next bridge there should be an entrance on the right into the Sydney Gardens.
If you have the time you can explore the gardens, there is a playground, museum and café.
To rejoin the canal, you will need to exit onto Sydney Road toward Sham Castle lane but then turn right just before this road, down a lane. You need to be in this location (51.38548, -2.347737) to rejoin the canal. Then carry on straight with the canal on your right to head to Bath.
A short way along you will reach a road with a zebra crossing which you will need to cross then walk right along the bridge then left down some steps to rejoin the canal walk.
At the end of the path after the Lodge Cottage you will need to cross a small quiet road, straight across to continue.
After going down some small steps and round a corner, you will then need to cross a busier road where the path continues on the left side of the bridge. There are traffic lights with a pedestrian crossing to the right of the exit, which is a safe option for crossing the road.
The finishing point is now 6 minutes away, this is the worst part of the walk where it’s narrow for only person at a time. You will then come up to some steps to come up to the road, where you will turn right and cross the bridge.
Head left to the pedestrian crossings, you will need to cross to the right, past Chilli Family Noodles and the Bus Station and head down Dorchester Street where the Bath Spa train station will be on your right.
The train station has toilets and plenty of eating spots.
From here you can get the train back to Bradford-on-Avon, which takes 13 minutes from £6.20pp.
