Whether she’s singing about battling a demon guitar, turning into a misunderstood were-creature, or simply dreaming of a big tour bus, you never know what fascinating tale will unfold in a Mean Mary show. A virtuoso multi-instrumentalist with a voice described by No Depression as “hauntingly rich, fierce, and flexible,” Mary moves between banjo, fiddle, guitar, and more. Backed by her full band, the music gets bigger, the rhythms get stronger, and before long, things get downright foot-stomping.It’s always a spontaneous night. Mary has been on the road since she was five years old, so the stage is just a second home to her. She likes to keep things about as formal as sitting around a campfire, cutting up and playing songs with friends—minus the campfire, of course (the venues always veto it for some reason). Stories and laughter are always part of the show, plans sometimes change in the moment, and the audience is simply invited along for the ride.
Expect a night that’s heartfelt, funny, sometimes a little strange, and a whole lot of fun—all unmistakably Mean Mary.
