Mark DeGarmo Dance Continues its 2023 Virtual Salon Performance Series for Social Change, Featuring International, U.S., New York City Emerging, BIPOC Performing Artists on Thursday, May 4th 2023 at 7PM ET on Zoom: a sharing of works-in-progress with a facilitated audience response curated and facilitated by dancer, choreographer, writer, researcher, and Founder, Executive & Artistic Director of MDD Dr. Mark DeGarmo.

Mark DeGarmo Dance launches its transcultural transdisciplinary Virtual Salon Performance Series for Social Change to an international audience on Zoom with performances featuring global performing artists from New York and the Dominican Republic of Congo-Kinshasa -- David Appel (Brooklyn, New York), Kathy Luo (Lexington, Kentucky), Charly Santagado (Metuchen, New Jersey), and Miranda Stück (New York, New York) on Thursday, May 4th at 7PM ET. Each performance is curated and includes audience response supported, encouraged, and facilitated by Dr. Mark DeGarmo.

Founded in 2010, MDD's Salon Performance Series for Social Change provides a curated opportunity to view, engage with, and demystify original dance and movement works-in-progress of selected guest artists. In addition to New York City, Since October of 2020, MDD presented in 18 salons, including 2 Virtual International Arts Festivals featuring 329 Artists from 18 states: California, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky. Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin & 29 countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Democratic Republic of Congo, England, France, Germany, Haiti, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Scotland, Spain, Trinidad, Tobago, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, United Kingdom, & USA.

Mark DeGarmo Dance supports under-resourced and under-recognized dance and movement artists based in New York City, the U.S., and internationally. MDD’s immediate pivot to live virtual programming since March 2020 has led the fields of dance, performing arts, education, and nonprofit organizations from the beginning of the pandemic. MDD’s webinar on navigating live remote teaching with New York City public elementary schools and students for the National Dance Education Organization for 150 U.S. dance educators in June 2020 exemplifies its commitment to dance in all of its forms for all audiences locally, nationally, and internationally.

Dancer/performer, choreographer, writer, and researcher Mark DeGarmo curates the series and supports and facilitates audience response as part of each salon. DeGarmo guides discourse among the artists and audience members and encourages the public to actively participate in the development of original works-in-progress and understanding of dance as an accessible transcultural transdisciplinary art form and an essential part of humankind’s cultural heritage.

About the Artists

David Appel is a choreographer, dancer, and teacher whose work has been presented in various contexts and settings throughout North America, Europe, and in Mexico since 1973. Part of the early post-Judson generation that transmitted and transformed those artists’ innovations, he has since primarily followed his own path, while performing along the way with Simone Forti, Steve Paxton, City Dance Theater of Boston, as an instigator and/or part of several dance/music collaborative and improvisation groups, and with many other individual artists in various media.

Kathy Luo is a multifaceted dance artist and educator from Phoenix, Arizona. Her academic occupation includes her role of serving as full time faculty at the University of Kentucky, as well as teaching credits at Arizona State University. She has earned her Dance M.F.A degree along with the Dance Artist Teaching Praxis Certificate from Arizona State University. Her professional skills range from codified Modern Dance techniques, Contemporary Dance, and Ballet to Asian Diasporic Dance Technique and Yoga/Pilates training. Kathy's dance research explores contemporary dance choreography as a primary tool to investigate interdisciplinary collaboration in immersive dance theater production and site-specific/adaptive projects. Kathy is interested in evoking a wide range of audience participation to honor our diverse social identities that provoke critical and thoughtful discourse and bring different disciplines together to initiate creative ownership.

Charly, co-founder and artistic director of mignolo dance, is a dancer, choreographer, writer, and curator. Originally from Orlando, Florida, and currently based in the NJ / NY area, she has danced with several companies and choreographers including Heidi Latsky Dance, VALLETO Dance, ReFrame Dance Theatre, and Yu.S. Artistry, and regularly performs in her own work, which has been presented at numerous venues around the tristate area.

Miranda Stuck is a professional dancer from Seattle, Washington and currently resides in New York City. Prior to graduating from the Ailey/Fordham BFA program, Miranda trained classically at the Pacific Northwest Ballet School. Miranda currently dances with Eryc Taylor Dance and apprentices with Stubborn MVMT. As a freelance artist, Miranda has previously danced with Alison Cook Beatty Dance, Matthew Westerby Company, and Buglisi Dance Theatre. Miranda has had the pleasure of dancing in music videos for Luis D and Kelly Monrow, and performed in the closing runway show for Marc Jacobs Fall 2020 NYFW. As a choreographer, Miranda has commissioned two works with New Work Series at the TADA Theatre in Manhattan, one work with Alpha Omega Dance Theatre's Studio to Stage festival, and a solo work with Mark DeGarmo Virtual International Dance Festival as well as Cross Move Lab curated by Guanglei Hui.

About Mark DeGarmo

Mark DeGarmo, Ph.D., B.F.A. is a New York City-based dancer/performer, choreographer, writer, and researcher who hails from a rural New York State farming community. He is Founder, Executive & Artistic Director of Mark DeGarmo Dance. DanceTeacher Magazine highlighted DeGarmo’s accomplishments in its June 2017 cover feature article and the Martha Hill Dance Fund recognized his achievements with its 2015 Mid-Career Award.
