The core intention of this hands-on workshop is to share an effective and comprehensive hip and lumbar treatment protocol with a significant focus on sidelying work. Sidelying is an incredibly useful treatment position, yet it is often under emphasized in massage therapy education outside of working with pregnancy patients. This workshop offers therapists an opportunity to build confidence, skill, and creativity in working from this position.
Through guided practice, we will explore hands-on techniques that combine manual therapy with active and assisted movement, helping therapists assess and treat the hip and lumbar complex from a different perspective. We will cover draping, practitioner bio mechanics, movement facilitation, strength and conditioning cues, and patient communication, with an emphasis on adapting techniques to individual needs and treatment goals.
The intention is to expand your clinical toolkit and provide more comprehensive treatment options for your patients. By combining skilled touch with movement and active participation, we aim to help patients develop greater trust in their tissues, improve how they use their bodies, and make meaningful progress toward their goals.
LEAD FACILITATOR:
Farley Johansson, RMT
Farley Johansson is a Registered Massage Therapist, movement educator, and former professional dancer with more than 30 years of experience in Classical Ballet and Contemporary Dance, and over 20 years teaching at a professional level. He is also the owner of THAT CLINIC in Victoria, BC.
Farley has taught Classical Ballet, Contemporary Dance, and Contact Improvisation to professional dancers and artistic athletes at SFU, Ballet BC, Mannheim University, the New Zealand Contemporary Dance Company, the National Ballet of Bahia in Brazil, and professional dance companies throughout Germany.
He brings this extensive movement and teaching background into his RMT education. His courses emphasize observation, hands-on learning, movement analysis, practitioner biomechanics, and adapting techniques to different bodies and presentations. Farley encourages therapists to develop their ability to observe, assess, and make informed choices around positioning, contact, pressure, leverage, and their own body mechanics.
Since becoming an RMT in 2016, Farley has worked with a wide range of acute and chronic presentations, from geriatrics and pregnant patients to desk workers and high-performance athletes. His clinical and sport experience includes medical staff positions with Rowing Canada Aviron and Athletics Canada, as well as work with athletes from Rugby Canada and Cycling Canada.
His courses are grounded in practical, immediately applicable skills, with the goal of helping therapists become more confident, adaptable, curious, and effective in their hands-on practice.

Before becoming a Registered Massage Therapist, Shannon spent more than 30 years as a professional classical ballet and contemporary dance artist, teacher, and choreographer, performing throughout Canada, Europe, and Brazil. Movement has always been at the heart of her life. Through both her dance career and her experience raising two children, she has developed a deep appreciation for the incredible resilience of the human body—as well as the challenges that come with injury, pain, recovery, and change.
