Maya Geometry: From Textiles to Music a workshop with Aurora Nohemi Chaj
Join Aurora Nohemi Chaj, a Maya K’iche’ architect, researcher, and musician, for an interactive workshop exploring Maya geometry through textiles, architecture, worldview, and sound.
During the workshop, participants will learn how geometric forms found in Maya textiles transmit knowledge, memory, and identity across generations, and how Aurora connects these forms with architecture, worldview, and sound in her contemporary creative practice.
Participants will also receive a printed canvas based on one of the two huipiles studied during the workshop, which they can color later at home.
This workshop presents part of the research and creative process Aurora develops through her artistic and musical practice, and will serve as an introduction to the conceptual world of her concert , taking place at the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles on October 25, 2026 and presented by .
The workshop will be presented in Spanish with English interpretation available.

Aurora Nohemi Chaj is a Maya K’iche’ architect, researcher, educator, and musician from Guatemala, currently based in Los Angeles. Her interdisciplinary work explores the relationships between Maya geometry, textiles, architecture, cultural memory, identity, and sound.
Through her research project “Maya Geometry in Maya Textiles,” she studies geometric systems found in Maya textile traditions and their connections to Indigenous knowledge, worldview, and contemporary creative practices.
As a musician, she brings part of this research into compositions that integrate Maya cultural references, acoustic instruments, electronic sounds, and storytelling. Her recent project, Mayab’ Folktrónica, explores the dialogue between ancestral knowledge and contemporary sound.
Aurora is currently serving as an advisor to the curator of an upcoming exhibition at Craft Contemporary focused on Maya textiles, contributing her research and knowledge of Maya textile traditions and geometry to the exhibition development process. She is also part of the City of Los Angeles artist roster.

PARKING
We encourage attendees to consider carpooling, walking or biking to events if possible, and please be considerate of our Los Feliz neighbors when parking. Street parking is available on Griffith Park Blvd. and (after 7 PM) on Los Feliz Blvd. Limited parking is available onsite at PRS in the front lot (entry from Los Feliz Blvd. when heading east). PRS EVENT POLICIES
- We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.
- Events are subject to change without notice, including guest speakers and/or performers.
- We encourage you to arrive at least 30 min. before the scheduled event start time to find parking, enjoy the Bookstore, and take your seats.
- Please turn off all mobile devices before the show. Talking and texting are not allowed during the events.
- No filming, audio recording or mobile phone recording of events, screenings, concerts or other programs by audience members is allowed without permission.
- There is no smoking permitted on PRS grounds.
- We strongly encourage guests to wear masks to PRS events to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
- PRS allows Service Animals into the facility under ADA and state guidelines. For further details please visit www.ADA.gov. No animals permitted whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support, under ADA guidelines and CA Health Code.
- Please do not bring outside food or drink into PRS events.
- Weapons are strictly prohibited at PRS events.
