Howdy Friends! Well, I am beyond excited to announce a return to the legendary @cactuscafeatx next month with @thatjazzpunk 🎻 and the band, and we’ll be joined by my dear friends @ukemi_music We go waaaay back together. Ukemi has been so kind and supportive of me since the beginning. They gave me my first stage time at Flipnotics opening for them decades ago (swipe for photo) when I just had started teaching. (from Spider House Blues - “we was down at Flipnotics…”) They were always the coolest band with the best musicians and I just hung around listenin and lovin it all, watchin them play awesome shows at southby and all around town, collaborating with dancers and always doing something unique in the scene over the years. I am one of their biggest fans for sure! They would even let me come over to house jams and get my mind blown by their brilliance and they always believed in me and encouraged me. They invited me to play with them many times since, and have always given me so much love and I have been continually inspired by these beautiful souls. They are sort of a super group of many songwriters, with far ranging styles, and there’s honestly nothing like it!! We are in for a real treat and I can’t wait!

Matthew Payne Bio:
Combine Townes Van Zandt with Jimmie Rodgers, and somewhere in the middle, you’ll find Matthew Payne.
Texas songwriter and Americana artist Matthew Payne grew up in the beautiful hill country surrounding Dripping Springs, and worked as an educator in Austin for almost two decades. He taught high school English and Creative Writing, and loved every minute of it. The release of his debut EP, Coyote Howlin Blues, showcases an earthy, down-home style reminiscent of the old-time country and acoustic blues traditions of Texas songwriters mixed with Appalachian folk. It explores the human heart at its raw depth. It’s a love story, perhaps, among other things, and howls like the wild coyote. “Matthew’s vocals crack with raw authenticity and the songs sparkle like bright amethysts you find when you split open the dusty rocks of life,” says Americana Highways.
Dear special guests, Austin band Ukemi is:
"Theatre for the ears. An honest, powerful and entertaining record."
- Richard Dodd, Grammy Award-Winning Producer (Tom Petty, The Wallflowers)
"Dynamic, cinematic, cathartic, and dense. Brings to mind gypsy rock, indie folk, and a film score - all in one night."
