Matthew Barney is an American contemporary artist and filmmaker known for his interdisciplinary practice that combines sculpture, film, performance, and installation. His work brings together stories, figures, and symbols from different historical periods and cultures with real landscapes and personal experiences, exploring the interconnected relationship between moving images and physical artworks.
These narrative elements are transformed and presented through different media and forms, highlighting how moving images and physical artworks are intertwined and mutually generative. This exhibition continues the narrative of the film Redoubt, further developing its story through electroplated copper works, drawings, sculpture, and other media.
Barney was born in San Francisco, California, in 1967, and currently lives and works in New York. He has held solo exhibitions and touring exhibitions at major international art institutions, including Tate Gallery, London, UK; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, USA; Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul, South Korea; The Morgan Library & Museum, New York, USA; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, USA. His solo exhibition at the Yale University Art Gallery in the United States subsequently traveled to the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) in Beijing, China.
