? MATARIKI MORNING 2026 ?Join us at Wakatu Quay this Matariki for a relaxed and welcoming community morning as we gather to celebrate the rising of Matariki above the Kaikōura coastline.
As the first light of day appears, we'll be observing the heliacal rise of Matariki through telescopes, sharing stories and kōrero about the significance of Matariki, and enjoying a warm, family-friendly atmosphere by the fire.
Enjoy free bacon sandwiches, tea, coffee and hot chocolate, explore the night sky through virtual reality experiences, and learn more about both the stars above and the traditions that make Matariki such an important time of reflection, remembrance and hope.
This is a free event open to everyone. While there is no charge to attend, donations to the Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust are greatly appreciated and help support future community astronomy and dark sky initiatives.
