matahari (‘sun’) is inspired by the way sunlight streams into the house through the windows, moving across the space as the day progresses. The shadows are said to resemble the grid-like structure of HDB flats, and the way the moving shadows engulf the space evokes a visceral response for some viewers.
Bio:
Mahyuddin Chan is an interactive installation artist who is inspired by everyday experiences. Using electronics as his medium, he creates quiet, subtle installations that seek to magnify the magic in mundane moments. With the viewer’s presence a key component in activating the artworks, his work engages not just the gaze, but also the physicality of one’s body.
matahari is part of Last Place on Earth, the inaugural season at the Kewalram House Space.
