Free Mask-Making Workshop
What would you create if you were simply asked to make a mask?
Join artist Helon Wilson for a free, hands-on mask-making workshop in St Helens, using paper plates, paper bags, drawing and collage to create your own original mask.
This isn't simply a craft activity, your mask will become part of a wider Artist-Led St Helens project, exploring and documenting the people, experiences and responses that make up our community.
The workshop is an opportunity to make something, contribute something and become part of the artwork itself. What you choose to create is entirely up to you - there are no right or wrong answers and you don't need to be an artist to take part.
Once your mask is complete, you'll be invited to wear it and join the other participants for a group photograph. Photographs and participants' experiences will help the artists develop and document the wider project.
The workshop is being facilitated by expressive artist Helon Wilson, with photographers Angela Wilkinson and Jeff Gilan.
What you need to know
- Make your own original mask
- All materials supplied
- No previous art experience needed
- All ages and abilities welcome
- A welcoming space for everyone
- Photography will take place during the workshop, including a group photograph with finished masks
- FREE - just 20 places available
Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
When booking, you will be asked to give consent for photographs to be taken during the workshop and for the resulting images to be used as part of the project.
Your participation matters. Come along, make something of your own, and help shape a piece of artwork being created in St Helens.

The project is about creating a space where everyone is welcome. We particularly want to welcome people from all backgrounds and communities, including autistic people, people living with dementia, refugees and asylum seekers, and LGBTQIAAP+ communities.
