Step into one of Old Delhi most layered neighbourhoods, where medieval architecture, Sufi traditions, political upheaval and living cultural practices come together in unexpected ways.

We begin with the history of Turkman Gate and explore the remarkable 14th century Kalan Masjid, before discovering the Sufi legacy associated with Turkman Bayabani. The walk also revisits the turbulent history of Turkman Gate during the Emergency, when the area became the site of a deeply distressing chapter in Delhi urban history.

Our journey then takes us to the mazaar of Razia Sultan, the only woman to rule the Delhi Sultanate in her own right. Her extraordinary story invites us to reflect on power, gender and the complicated legacy of one of medieval India most fascinating rulers.

And then, we look up towards the skies of Old Delhi.

The second part of this experience introduces us to kabutarbazi, the traditional practice of pigeon flying. Although it became particularly popular as a recreational pursuit in Shahjahanabad during the Mughal era, the tradition has much older roots.

We will visit the rooftop of a kabutarbazi expert, interact with him, hear about the practice and its place in Old Delhi cultural life, and watch as he releases his pigeons into the sky. This is an opportunity to encounter a living tradition that has been passed down through generations and remains an intimate part of the city social and cultural fabric.

Combining historic monuments, Sufi stories, the memory of the Emergency and a special rooftop interaction with a practitioner of kabutarbazi, this walk offers a distinctive and immersive experience of Old Delhi.
