WHY ATTEND
Learn how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and toxic stress can affect children's health and development - and how families and communities can help children build resilience and hope. The seminar, featuring Jennifer Samartano, includes a screening of "Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope," followed by a panel discussion.
Resilience is a one-hour documentary that explores the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences. The documentary examines toxic stress and how it negatively alters the brains and bodies of children, putting them at greater risk for disease, homelessness, Pr*son time, and early death, if left unattended.

Following the screening, Samartano will moderate a panel discussion featuring five experts:
- Heather Kendall, senior programs manager of NAMI Cook County North Suburban
- Lisa Hassler Thomas, Ph.D., ATR, LCO, art therapist of United Stand
- Ilinca Wallace, Ph.D., regional council manager of Birth to Five Illinois
- Victoria Poklop, social worker of the Des Plaines Police Department
- Sarah Melgarejo, clinical director of Maryville Academy
About Jennifer Samartano, Speaker and Panel Moderator
Jennifer is a prevention specialist with Prevent Child Abuse Illinois and program manager for its child sexual abuse prevention programs. She collaborates with community partners, advocates for children and promotes child abuse prevention throughout northern Illinois. She is also a certified facilitator and instructor for Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children program.
Jennifer serves on several child protection boards and committees and previously worked as a child and family advocate supporting children affected by sexual abuse. She holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from Loyola University and a master’s degree in nonprofit management and leadership from Walden University.
