🎬 Ever since the British playwright of Irish descent, Martin McDonagh, switched more or less full-time from theatre to film during the first decade of the 21st century, British cinema has been bringing a unique and unmistakable auteur flair to the world. McDonagh’s films boast a masterful balance of dialogue with a distinctive and robust dramatic arc, and are imbued with pitch-black humour, full-blooded characters, political and social satire, balladic melancholy, and a madness that is both familial and, indeed, civilisational – and the absurd violence that springs from it.
We will be presenting this acclaimed screenwriter and director in a double bill featuring his latest film – a stylish retro-set film set during the coup d’état and military dictatorship in Chile in the 1970s, Wild Horse Nine – and the director’s most successful film to date, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, featuring the fantastic Frances McDormand as a vigilante in a modern-day American social commentary with Western-style elements. Neither film would be complete without McDonagh’s favourite megastar, Sam Rockwell.
