Mandy Rowden is an Austin-area musician, songwriter, educator, and entrepreneur who has spent nearly two decades helping women find their voices through music. She is the founder of Girl Guitar, the Austin-based music school and community for women she launched in 2007, and the founder and director of the Texas Women Songwriters Festival. A longtime performing songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, Mandy has released original music, performed extensively, and built a career at the intersection of musicianship, songwriting, education, and the business of music. She also teaches Music Business courses at Texas State University and is passionate about giving musicians practical tools to become more confident, creative, and intentional in their craft.GUITAR FOR SONGWRITERS: MAKING YOUR GUITAR SERVE THE SONG
Let’s explore how to use the guitar as more than just something to strum while you sing — and start using it as a creative tool for songwriting.
We’ll talk about taking your existing (or soon-to-be-existing!) chord progressions and give them texture, depth, and style.. We’ll look at ways to break out of familiar chord shapes and strumming patterns and make your guitar parts feel more intentional and distinctive.
We’ll work with dynamics, groove, space, and simple arrangement ideas that can completely change the feel of a song — without requiring you to be a virtuoso guitar player.
We’ll also explore how your guitar part can help shape a melody, create movement between sections, build intensity, and give verses, choruses, and bridges their own identities.
Most importantly, this workshop is about becoming a more confident, creative guitarist for the songs you want to write — and having a lot of fun in the process!
