About this Event
Mala Making Workshop
Create your own traditional 108-bead mala and learn how to use it as part of a simple mantra practice.
This practical workshop gives you the opportunity to make a mala that feels personal to you. A selection of traditional mala materials will be available, including sandalwood, rudraksha, tulsi, ebony, vijyanti and lotus, each with its own associations and significance. You’ll also be able to choose from a selection of finishing options, including guru beads, tassels, charms and more.
During the workshop, you’ll learn:
* the traditional structure of a 108-bead mala
* the purpose of the guru or sumeru bead* how malas are traditionally used for mantra practice
* how to hold and move through your mala during japa
* how to assemble and finish your own mala
* three simple mantras that can be used in everyday personal practice
We’ll practise each mantra together, looking at pronunciation, meaning and when you might choose to use it.
The emphasis is on creating something you will genuinely want to use, rather than simply making a piece of jewellery. By the end of the session, you’ll leave with your completed mala and a simple mantra practice you can continue at home.
All materials are included, and no previous experience of mantra, meditation or mala making is needed.
Please note that bead choices will be made on the day and will be available on a first-choice basis from the selection provided.
