Dressing The Greatest Showman: How a Costume Vision Becomes Reality
A costume may begin with a designer’s creative vision. But bringing that vision to life for the screen requires an entirely different kind of expertise.
Join the Barnum Museum for a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the complex process of turning costume concepts into finished garments with Dr. Pat Trautman, internationally recognized costume specialist, garment engineer, and founder of Global Garment Engineering.
Drawing from her work on major productions including The Greatest Showman, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Bridgerton, Dr. Trautman will take guests beyond the costume sketch and into the extraordinary technical and collaborative work required to make a designer’s ideas possible.
From sourcing the right materials and translating designs into workable patterns to solving challenges of fit, sizing, construction, consistency, and production, Pat’s work sits at the point where creative vision meets real-world execution.
Through stories, images, and examples from her career, guests will discover how costume professionals collaborate behind the scenes to transform an idea into garments that can withstand the demands of performance, production, and the camera.
Special attention will be given to Pat’s work on The Greatest Showman, offering a rare glimpse into the process behind bringing the film’s spectacular visual world to life. Samples from selected productions will also be on display, giving guests an up-close look at the craftsmanship, technical precision, and problem-solving that audiences rarely get to see.
About Dr. Pat Trautman
Dr. Pat Trautman is the founder of Global Garment Engineering and an internationally recognized expert in garment engineering, costume construction, fit, and technical design. Her career spans theater, film, television, museum exhibitions, and international apparel production, working collaboratively with designers and production teams to turn creative concepts into finished garments.
