About this Event
Join WeAreWaterloo (BID) and Build Studios this June for our next Making Space for Women event, where we explore how safe and creative lighting can support a thriving night time economy. From railway tunnels to viaducts, we’ll look at how investment in imaginative lighting transforms underused spaces that shape our streetscapes.
Concerns about women’s safety after dark are not new, and continue to influence how women move through cities at night. This session considers how thoughtful illumination, layered lighting, clearer sightlines, and artist‑led installations can reduce fear, enhance visibility, and strengthen a sense of belonging.
This event highlights how practical safety measures paired with creative design can turn overlooked routes into welcoming, vibrant public spaces that foster confidence, connection, and community wellbeing.
About Making Space for Women
Making Space for Women is more than an events series – it’s a growing community for anyone committed to shaping a more equitable built environment. Co-created by WeAreWaterloo BID and Build Studios, our roots are in Waterloo, but our reach is sector-wide. We bring together women and allies across architecture, planning, engineering, construction, design, and beyond.
We welcome women, men, and gender-diverse colleagues – equity requires everyone’s involvement. Whether you join us for a single discussion or become an active voice in the network, you’ll be part of a community that champions inclusivity, celebrates achievements, and pushes for meaningful change.

About the venue
The David Nott Foundation headquarters in Waterloo was designed by Ukrainian designer, Maria Masliy, creating a multi-functional space that serves as a working office, training venue, and a specialized storage hub for medical equipment sent to crisis zones. The space is meticulously organized to facilitate trauma, anesthetic, and surgical training for doctors and has hosted previously hosted the London Design Festival showcase.
The venue is fully wheelchair accessible and has gender‑neutral bathroom facilities.
