Mahler's Symphony No. 1, "Titan": UMD Symphony Orchestra

The UMD Symphony Orchestra closes its 2026–27 season with Mahler’s triumphant Symphony No. 1 in D Major, “Titan.”
Gustav Mahler’s first symphony was inspired by many things. Folk and art song, visual art, philosophy, literature and even Mahler’s own emotional and spiritual life have been cited as having influenced the composition. Mahler revised the work several times, later adding programmatic movement titles and the nickname “Titan,” after a novel by one of his favorite Romantic writers, Jean Paul. While the movement titles were ultimately dropped, they outlined the symphony as a reflection of Paul’s novel—a sprawling, coming-of-age narrative that dealt with themes of youth, nature and emotional struggle.
These influences can be heard throughout the work. From the joyful dawning of youth and spring in the pastoral first movement to the distorted, somber funeral march rendition of Frère Jacques in the third, Mahler captures the volatility of the human spirit through what he described as “cosmic” sound. These themes come to a head in the fourth movement, a colossal finale of struggle, reminiscent of the final movement of Beethoven’s Ninth, that concludes in a triumphant accumulation of sound.
